Mastodon username lookup
A Mastodon username lookup reads the public account for a handle and returns it as fields. You get the display name, the bio, avatar and header image, follower and following counts, and the instance the account lives on. The same username can exist on dozens of instances and each one is a separate account, which is the thing to hold onto here.

What Mastodon exposes.
What a public Mastodon profile reports to a username search, field by field. Availability is honest per row: a mark says how often the field comes back, the note says when it does not.
The server half of the address. The same username on two instances means two unrelated accounts until something else connects them.
Free text with custom emoji allowed, changed as often as the account likes without touching the handle.
Mastodon bios run long by the standards of the wider web, and people fill them with pronouns, interests and their other accounts.
Both public, and the following number is usually the more informative of the two on a network this size.
Served from the storage of the instance itself, so the image address names the server the account sits on.
Unique on its own instance and meaningless elsewhere, so it only identifies an account when paired with the server name.
An account can prove it controls a website, and that is one of the few checkable identity signals anywhere on the network.
Some instances publish a joined month and others do not, because every server decides for itself what the public profile shows.

Three steps: Mastodon lookup.
- Step 1
Enter the username part of the handle, the piece before the second @.
- Step 2
Mastodon instances are checked together, so an account on a large general server and one on a small topic server both surface from a single search.
- Step 3
Read the instance name as context, then compare the bio links against the same handle on the platforms outside the network.
Before you search Mastodon.
How does a Mastodon handle work?
It has two parts, a username and a server, written as user at server. The username alone is not unique anywhere except on that one server.
Can one person hold the same name on several instances?
Yes, and many do exactly that to stop anyone else taking it. Several accounts with one name can be one person, a group of strangers, or both at once.
Does Mastodon verify anyone?
There is no central badge. What exists is link verification, where an account proves it controls a site, which is a stronger signal than a tick because you can check it yourself.
Can I read posts from a locked account?
No. A locked account approves its followers individually, and its posts do not appear on the public profile at all.
What happens when an instance shuts down?
The accounts on it go with it. People rebuild under the same username on a new server, so a familiar name on a different instance may be a move or may be a stranger.
Is a matching handle the same person I know elsewhere?
Not on its own. Handles are cheap to register across the network, and an account existing under a name is never by itself evidence of who runs it.
Can I search without an account?
Yes. Every visitor gets three checks a day here with no sign-up, and a free account keeps your searches instead of losing them with the tab.
Where the same handle tends to turn up.
Each page pins the live scan to that platform. The scan itself is always the whole corpus.
Username, then email, then phone.
A match on Mastodon is a lead. The other two lookups turn what it exposes into the next identifier.
